Everton had chances to extend their lead in the first half, but Abdoulaye Doucoure and Neal Maupay both missed good opportunities.
Southampton improved after the break and equalised in the 66th minute.
Mara headed home a cross from Romain Perraud to make it 1-1.

James Ward-Prowse scored the winning penalty for Southampton, while Tom Davies missed the decisive spot-kick for Everton.
