The Javan Rhino: Critically Endangered and on the Brink of Extinction
A Tragic Decline
Once found throughout south-east Asia, Javan rhinos have suffered a staggering decline in their numbers. Now, only a few dozen individuals remain in the wild, making them one of the most critically endangered species on the planet.
Causes of the Crisis
The Javan rhino's decline is attributed to a combination of factors, including habitat loss, poaching, and inbreeding. Their natural habitat has been destroyed by deforestation for agriculture and development, while poaching for their horns and other body parts has taken a heavy toll. Inbreeding has also weakened the species' genetic diversity, making them more susceptible to disease and other threats.
