House Passes USA FREEDOM Reauthorization Act of 2020

Landmark Legislation Safeguards Americans' Privacy Rights

Bill Advances to Senate for Further Consideration

[Date] - In a significant victory for civil liberties, the House of Representatives has passed H.R. 6172, also known as the USA FREEDOM Reauthorization Act of 2020. This bipartisan bill reauthorizes critical provisions of the USA FREEDOM Act of 2015, which sunsets at the end of 2020.

The USA FREEDOM Act has been praised by privacy advocates for its safeguards against government surveillance. The law restricts the government from conducting bulk data collection on Americans and requires the government to obtain a warrant before collecting communications records.

The reauthorization act extends these provisions through December 1, 2023. It also includes new provisions that strengthen privacy protections and accountability for government surveillance.

"The passage of this bill is a major step forward in protecting the privacy rights of all Americans," said Representative Zoe Lofgren (D-CA), a co-sponsor of the bill. "This bipartisan legislation demonstrates that we can both protect national security and safeguard our fundamental freedoms."

The bill now advances to the Senate for further consideration. If it passes the Senate and is signed into law by the President, it will ensure that the USA FREEDOM Act's essential privacy protections remain in place for years to come.
